Because of course.
It’s a $20 Dell with an incorrect version of Windows. I want to reformat and reinstall but now I have to wait. And wait. And wait...

No you don't. Just hold the power button down until it shuts off. Power on and at bios screen choose to boot from the disk.

Well, yeah. I didn’t mean to say reformat, but I do want to reinstall Pro over the Home Premium that’s there. Then again, there’s nothing I need to save so I guess I will reformat...

Why? Shutting it down in the middle of an update might bork things, but if you are refor matting anyway, who cares?
Just power that sucker down...

I misspoke. I wasn’t going to reformat, but now I’m getting HD errors so it’s time to swap the drive. At least it’s easy to get to.

With Win 10 you can just “unlock” Pro if the existing Home install is ok. You can just change the “key” to the correct version - see here:

Fresh install always. Windows is bloated enough without a single update.

Don't forget to delay the quality updates. The KB one ending in 996 borked two hard drives that took forever to reformat and reinstall.

The computer has a 7 Pro key, but home premium, with no key, installed. I was just going to update, but then I get a message saying that the HD is about to fail, so I’ll just swap in an SSD and try again.

I’ve heard about that, but so far I’ve updated a few systems and haven’t been affected by that bug. I’ll take a look when update time comes and see if I can delay that one.

Anyone running Windows and thinks the computer works for them is deluding themselves. You are Microsoft’s slave.
Few things are more annoying than being in the middle of working on a document and the damn computer decides it MUST reboot to update right this bloody instant. Didn’t already save your work? Too bad.
This is why I like my Unix computer at home. It only updates when *
I*
decide it is time to run and update, because the computer works for me.

Youd have to reformat anyway to go to pro.

They never make it easy, do they?
However, having the HD fail (probably the reason I got this E5520 for $20...) prompted me to replace it with an SSD and do a full install of 10. Problem solved.
